Establishment of the Anti-Revolutionary Party, the oldest political party in the Netherlands. It draws its adherents from the members of orthodox Calvinist congregations, and owes its foundation to the 'school conflict', about state subsidies for faith-based schools. The 1848 Constitution has given religious groups the right to establish their own schools, but the liberals feel that state-funded education should be non-denominational and oppose subsidies for faith-based schools. This is the start of ëpillarisationí, the religious segregation of the parties which will dominate Dutch politics for decades to come.
